Born in the largest favela of Rio de Janeiro, Rocinha, Flávio Carvalho, son of immigrant parents from Ceará, is a journalist, graduated from PUC-Rio, as well as a photographer and community reporter in the same favela where he was born.

Studying in public schools, the young man decided to take a chance on higher education. In 2008, he received a full scholarship to study social communication and journalism at PUC-Rio. In the fourth semester of his degree, he was invited to contribute to the newly created website FavelaDaRocinha.com.

 

He collaborated with the site by writing articles and taking photographs. His volunteer work for FDR is one of the activities that brings him the most joy.

This experience led to several professional opportunities, including an internship at Folha Dirigida, one and a half years working in the radio and press office units of PUC-Rio's Comunicar Projects, and work as a social media manager in the Press Office of the State Secretariat for Social Welfare and Human Rights. He also worked as a program assistant and journalist at the C4 Biblioteca Parque da Rocinha.​ He has worked as a content producer, photographer, videomaker, and social media manager for the Press Office of the World Mosquito Program, an initiative present in 14 countries and led in Brazil by Fiocruz, where he managed the project’s Instagram and YouTube channels.

​

He was an activist in the Cidade Unida movement and one of the founders of the photography collective FavelArt&Foto — a group of photographers who visit favelas with the aim of portraying their beauty. He is also a member of the Fotografando FavelaDaRocinha.com photoclub, one of the site’s affiliated projects. Flávio has been immersed in photography since 2009.
